We won!

Yesterday, students from the SRC participated in the Beaverton School District Track and Field meet at Beaverton High School. Though the cold temperatures, wind and rain tried to damper our spirits, NOTHING could destroy the excitement and anticipation our students had for this event! For weeks in APE we have been practicing our sprints, jumps and throwing ("ear, point, throw!"). In the classroom, we've been preparing for the event answering "wh" questions about the logistics of the event, playing track and field "games" on the SMART board and watching track and field videos.

Even with all this preparation though, I don't think they anticipated the joy they would feel when crossing the finish line to WIN a medal! All of the students in SRC primary got to run together, and upon finishing thier run, they were showered with cheers and praise from Beaverton HS student volunteers, including the Beaver mascot and BHS cheerleaders. We excitedly praised their efforts, and volunteers awarded each of them with their medals. This was such a moving moment to see, because each and every one of them seemed to swell with pride!

We also got filmed by a local news crew! Below is a link to the story shown on Koin local 6! Several of our students, and SRC alum are in this video. Looking forward to showing it to the kids on Monday, we're famous! :)

Exciting times ahead!

Track and field meet-May 23rd
First graders will travel on a bus to Beaverton High School and compete in a running event as well as lots of other fun field activities! Remember to send your student with a sack lunch and dressed for all kinds of weather. Right now the forecast is predicting showers, but with Oregon spring weather, I’m sure we’ll be surprised!

Camp-learned-a-lot
During the last week and a half of school, Sexton Mountain celebrates a year of learning with a camp theme! We review what we have learned and prepare for more learning in our years to come! There will be spirit days each day, and our kids will write camp letters, roast s’mores, participate in camp songs, and tie-dye t-shirts! If you want your child to tie-dye a t-shirt with the rest of the Sexton Mountain students, please send a washed white t-shirt to school by Wednesday, May 29th.

Hiking-various days from May 28th-June 13th
To celebrate our exploration of bugs, animals, weather, friends and transportation these last few months, we’ll be taking “hiking” trips twice a week during the last 3 weeks of school. These will be short walks (round trip .5-1.5 miles) to THPRD parks located around our school. Since we want to hike in good conditions, the permission slip is open-ended in terms of the date. If you would like, I can call/email you before and after each trip. Please sign and return the form as soon as possible.

Field day-Friday, June 7th
During the day on Friday the 7th, we will participate in field day games with the rest of Sexton Mountain students. Hooray! This will also be hat day, so you are welcome to send your student in a sun-shielding hat!

Pizza Party-Friday, June 7th 11:30-12:30
Each June, we celebrate a year of learning with our all-day first through fifth grade students! Both classrooms will gather together for a pizza party! Parents are welcome to attend for this hour and meet other families, and share in the pride with their students! The cost for this party is $3 per person attending. This will cover the cost of pizza, salad, drinks and dessert. As soon as possible, please complete the  pizza party form and submit payment.  And kindergarten families, we look forward to sharing in this tradition with you next year!
